Micro:bit Pet Workshop

Bring coding to life by creating your own digital pet using a Micro:bit. In this hands on workshop, students will program a pet that needs to be fed, cared for, and cleaned up after, while also keeping track of its happiness and anger levels.

As they build their pet, students will learn how code can be used to create interactive systems that respond to actions and change over time. They will explore how different choices affect their pet’s behaviour, then test and improve their program to make it more fun, balanced, and realistic.

This workshop blends coding, problem solving, and creative design in a way that is engaging and easy to understand, making it a great introduction to programming for homeschool learners.

Learning outcomes:

  • Coding and digital technologies

Learn how to program the Micro:bit using variables, conditionals, inputs, outputs, and simple logic

  • Systems thinking

Understand how actions and events can change a system over time, such as hunger, mood, and behaviour

  • Problem solving and debugging

Test code, find issues, and improve the pet’s behaviour through trial and error

  • Design and creativity

Make decisions about how the pet behaves, reacts, and communicates with the user

  • Mathematics and logic

Use number values and comparisons to measure things like happiness, anger, and care needs

This workshop is designed with older learners in mind. Suitability may vary depending on the child’s confidence, attention span, and readiness to engage independently.

Learning outcomes

Participants practise creative problem solving, engineering thinking, testing, iteration and collaboration through a practical hands-on activity.
