Suspension Bridges

We’re turning Croydon into a construction zone, and you’re invited to design and build your very own suspension bridge using only paper, string, and pipe cleaners!

In this hands-on workshop, kids will explore the science of forces, balance, and tension that make suspension bridges so strong. They’ll discover how cables distribute weight, why triangles add strength, and how engineers use design to solve real-world problems.

Once the science is explored, it’s time to put their knowledge into action - building and testing a bridge to see how much weight it can carry. Will your bridge hold strong, or will it collapse under pressure?

Learning outcomes

Participants practise creative problem solving, engineering thinking, testing, iteration and collaboration through a practical hands-on activity.
